The Honorable________
U.S. Senate or U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20510 (Senate) or 20515 (House)
Dear Senator or Representative_________:
I am writing to urge you to co-sponsor the Landmine Elimination
and Victim Assistance Act of 2001 (HR 948 in the House and S 497
in the Senate). Antipersonnel landmines maim or kill more than 20,000
people, mostly civilians, each year. More than two thirds of the
world's nations have joined the Mine Ban Treaty, prohibiting the
use, production, transfer, and stockpiling of landmines. The U.S.
has not, giving cover to those countries such as Russia and Pakistan
that are using landmines and killing civilians in the process.
Recently, during "Ban Landmines Week" in Washington, D.C.,
Her Majesty Queen Noor as well as U.S. and international landmine
survivors, met with Secretary of State Colin Powell and urged him
to support the Mine Ban Treaty. As a result of that meeting, Secretary
Powell indicated that landmines would be included in the new administration's
review of the military.
People in our district, our state, our nation, and our world care
deeply about this issue. Landmines are an outdated and indiscriminate
weapon of the past. Please support this legislation and bring our
country closer to joining the Mine Ban Treaty.
Sincerely,
Your name and address
