Background
In
honor of Ban Landmines Week March 5-11 in Washington, D.C., Senator
Leahy (D-VT) introduced the Landmine Elimination and Victim Assistance
Act of 2001 on March 8. The bill urges President George W. Bush
to join the Mine Ban Treaty as soon as possible; directs the Department
of Defense to field alternatives to antipersonnel mines; and directs
the President to create an inter-agency committee on landmine victim
assistance. Also on March 8, 2001, Representative Evans (D-IL),
with the outspoken support of Representatives Quinn (R-NY) and McGovern
(D-MA), introduced a companion bill in the House of Representatives.
