Senator Carl Levin, Democrat of Michigan, and Senator
John Warner, Republican of Virginia, serve as the leaders of the Senate
Armed Services Committee. Their positions on the landmine issue are important
to the President and to the nation. Thus far, they have not voiced support
for a US ban on antipersonnel landmines. Here are some ways that you and
people you know from these states can urge them to contact the Bush Administration
about the issue:
Can you ask people in Michigan to sign postcards
to Senator Levin?
Whether you think you can get 20 or 500 people (or somewhere in between)
to sign postcards to Sen. Levin, it would be a big help! Contact the campaign
at landmines@fcnl.org
or 617-695-0041 with your name, mailing address, email address, and the
number of postcards you can get signed.

Dear Senator Warner/Levin:
President Bush is expected to determine new US landmine policies soon.
I am writing to urge you to contact President Bush and ask him to ban
antipersonnel landmines and to instruct the US military not to deploy
the weapons if ground troops enter Iraq. These weapons, banned by the
majority of the world's nations including most NATO governments, cannot
distinguish between soldiers and children. In fact, 80% of people maimed
or killed by landmines are civilians, and one third of them are children.
Retired US military leaders have stated that AP landmines are outmoded
weapons that are often more of a hindrance than a help to US soldiers
on the modern battlefield. As a leader of the Senate Armed Services Committee,
it is your job to protect innocent civilians as well as US troops. In
this role, please urge the President to ban this indiscriminate weapon.
Sincerely,
