Attending the Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World?
Dear US Campaign to Ban Landmines Member,
Are you thinking about or already planning
to attend the Nairobi Summit on a Mine-Free World -the five year
Review Conference on the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty? This exciting
and important gathering will be held in Nairobi, Kenya November
29-December 3, 2004 when hundreds of government officials and campaigners
throughout the world will assess the global landmine situation,
the successes thus far of the treaty and the movement, and what
still needs to be done to address the problem.
If you are based in the US and would like
to attend this conference (or have already registered), please let
me know as soon as possible, but no later than September 15, so
that I can get all of the US-based participants in touch with each
other before the conference begins and, if necessary, help you determine
before the September 30 registration deadline if you are eligible
to register. (Emails sent to me about this should start with
"Nairobi" in the subject heading.) At some point in October
or November, we will hold one or two important conference calls
for all US-based conference participants to discuss the US Campaign
to Ban Landmines (USCBL) message and strategy for the Nairobi conference
and to hear about any individual activities you and your own organizations
may have planned. We will also likely ask for people to sign-up
to help with particular lobby meetings and a possible briefing and/or
press conference in Nairobi.
The International Campaign to Ban Landmines allows
for official registration for the conference by people who are part
of groups that are members of the campaign. If you are unsure
if your group is officially part of the US or International Campaigns
to Ban Landmines or if you are an individual not affiliated with
a group, please let me know, and I'll look into this for you. The
on-line form can be found at http://www.icbl.org/nairobisummit/registration.
You would be registering with the International Campaign to
Ban Landmines, but again, please do let us know at the USCBL if
you are US-based and registering.
Unfortunately, the USCBL is not able to provide
any financial assistance to any participants, so people and/or organizations
will have to figure out how to fund their own trips.
Youth Summit in Nairobi
If you are planning to apply for the Youth Summit that will take
place during this landmines Review Conference, the US Campaign to
Ban Landmines, Mines Action Canada, the Youth Mine Action Ambassador
Program, and the International Campaign to Ban Landmines invite
you to nominate yourself or other young people to attend “In
Our Lifetime: The 2004 International Youth Symposium on Landmines”
in Nairobi, Kenya. The symposium will run from November 25 to December
3, 2004 and will include up to 35 youth from around the world between
the ages of 18 and 26. It is being held as part of the 1997 Mine
Ban Treaty’s official Review Conference. The Youth Mine Action
Ambassador Program, Mines Action Canada, and the International Campaign
to Ban Landmines (not the USCBL) will determine who will be accepted
to attend the youth summit, likely by October 1. Between 1 and 3
participants from the United States will likely be chosen.
The Youth Summit (housing, food, conference materials,
in-country transportation, etc) will cost about $750. Airfare
is separate. Unfortunately, the USCBL is not able to provide
any funding support, though the Youth Summit organizers may be able
to offer specific suggestions to help you find your own funding.
Youth must submit an application form by September
1, available at this link:
http://www.dangermines.ca/pdf/IYS_Application_form.doc
AND ALSO LET US KNOW THAT YOU ARE APPLYING by
emailing us and putting “Nairobi youth summit application”
in the subject heading (you can just forward us your application
form if you'd like). Once we see who and how many US-based youth
are applying, the USCBL will determine whose application(s) we will
officially nominate. We will try to be in touch with you about our
decisions for nomination sometime in September.
Thanks and Best Regards,
Gina Coplon-Newfield
