| New Poll Shows 80% of Americans Want US
to Join Mine Ban Treaty
According to a major poll on Americans’ views on foreign policy
released in late September, 2004 by the Chicago Council on Foreign
Relations, 80% of the American public believes that the US government
should support the international treaty banning landmines. For
the full poll results, visit www.ccfr.org
(landmine question on page 38).
Another new poll released by the Program on International
Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland demonstrates assumptions
potential voters make about the positions held by President Bush
and Senator Kerry. Landmines is one of the topics covered. For more

Finally, a joint study was released on October
1, 2004 by the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations and the Program
on International Policy Attitudes called "The Hall of Mirrors:
How Leaders and Public Perceive Each Other." It also
includes content on the landmines issue. The study finds
"that the American public and American leaders—including
senior Congressional staffers, administration officials, and leaders
in business, labor, media and other areas— agree on many key
foreign policy issues, but that Congress frequently votes contrary
to this consensus." To read the report, visit www.pipa.org
