US further isolated, as Iraq becomes 155th State Party to Mine Ban Treaty

On August 15th  Iraq acceded to the Mine Ban Treaty, becoming the 155th state to do so. Under the treaty Iraq will destroy its stockpile of mines by 2012 and conclude demining efforts in areas under its jurisdiction by 2018.

The move further isolates the United States, placing it among an ever decreasing minority of countries that has not joined the treaty. In 2004 President Bush announced that the U.S. would not sign the treaty.
